Common Acid Reflux Triggers and How to Avoid Them

Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is a condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms. This can be a chronic condition and can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. Fortunately, many acid reflux triggers can be identified and avoided.

Foods to Avoid

Certain foods can trigger acid reflux symptoms in some people. Some of the most common trigger foods include:

  • Fried and fatty foods
  • Spicy foods
  • Citrus fruits
  • Tomatoes and tomato-based products
  • Garlic and onions
  • Mint
  • Chocolate
  • Alcohol and caffeine

It is important to note that different people have different triggers, and what may cause symptoms in one person may not cause them in another. Keeping a food diary can help you identify your personal trigger foods.

Eating Habits

In addition to certain foods, certain eating habits can also trigger acid reflux symptoms. Some tips to avoid triggering symptoms include:

  • Eating large meals or lying down right after a meal
  • Eating close to bedtime
  • Wearing tight clothing or belts
  • Eating too quickly

Lifestyle Changes

There are also some lifestyle changes that can help reduce the risk of acid reflux symptoms:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Quitting smoking
  • Avoiding lying down after eating
  • Elevating the head of your bed
  • Wearing loose clothing
  • Practicing stress-reducing techniques, such as deep breathing and meditation

Medications

In some cases, medications can also trigger acid reflux symptoms. These include aspirin, ibuprofen, certain muscle relaxers, and blood pressure medications. If you think your medication may be causing your symptoms, talk to your doctor. They may be able to switch you to a different medication that won’t trigger symptoms.
